Wash or not wash
What you will not see on the desktops of colleagues! In addition to the obligatory computer and phone, a flower in a pot, photos of family members, a dirty mug… only a slob could Leave it. Or a very far-sighted person.
The habit of rinsing the mug with water once a week, or even less often, is not as bad as people think. Moreover, in an office environment, it is even useful, says infectious disease specialist, Professor of Pediatrics at Baylor medical College, Jeffrey Starke.
However, fans of dirty mugs, according to Starke, should remember and follow two rules.
First, you can’t give your mug to colleagues.
Second, still rinse it if there are cream and sugar left. Otherwise, it will be covered with mold, and this is dangerous.
Of course, a dirty mug that is filled with water and touched with hands and lips is an environment that is perfect for breeding microbes.
But their concentration does not become dangerous for the owner, because most microorganisms, being in the external environment, die within an hour, says the expert.
Even if you drink coffee from a mug while sick and leave it dirty for a while, the chances of getting sick again are quite low. Viruses can persist on the surface, but the body is already “familiar” with them and has developed an immune system.
Owners of dirty mugs that are periodically washed under the pressure of colleagues, it is important not to make a fatal mistake — to use a common sponge for this.
It is, Starke points out, the dirtiest item in the office:
a common sponge in the office wipes the dishes countless times, after which the sponge remains wet for a long time and collects microbes from the entire team.
After washing the mug with such a sponge, it is much easier to get sick than if you do not wash it at all.
Therefore, leaving a dirty mug on the table, especially during the flu season — is a great way to avoid falling victim to another epidemic.
If you decide to “refresh” the mug in the office, it is best to rinse it with water, adding liquid soap if desired, and then dry it with a paper towel. Or wash the mug at home.
